From & About Codie
I grew up in beautiful San Marcos,
Texas, about 30 minutes south of Austin. After
graduating high school, I began looking far and wide for a great design school. I
found it decidedly convenient that Southwest Texas
there in San Marcos (now Texas State University) had a burgeoning Communication
Design program from which I graduated, magna cum laude,
in December 1998.
My father gave me two gifts that have
proven fundamental to who I am today. The first is
craftsmanship. You should see him work with his hands!
Cutting corners is not an option, and even the smallest
task is done with precision. Second, and equally important,
is a sense of wonder. Everything in our spheres of
influence has something interesting about it. I purposely
look for those things. Only boring people get bored,
right?
I bring a lot of unique experiences
to the table. I think that's important as a
designer. One morning you're working
on a logo for a coffee shop, and that afternoon you're
building a Flash website that shows advances in computer chip manufacturing. Being interested, as a matter of habit, is recommended.
So here are some interesting things
about me: I am married and we have two awesome boys. I have a license to fly airplanes. I can solve all the Rubiks-type cubes (2x2 - 7x7). I used
to be a janitor at Walt Disney World. I am an Eagle
Scout. I have a good number of stamps in my passport; Japan is my favorite destination. I am one of those crazy Mensans. My faith plays a vital role in my life. I was
drum major of my high school marching band. I
was a finalist at the World Championship Rattlesnake
Races. I have a fiction addiction. Power tools shape
my world. I have a Ducktorate Degree from Disney University
(as opposed to a Mousters). I love to cook. Primo Parrothead, that's me.
And a string of green traffic lights gives me the warm
and fuzzies.
I started CD Austin well before graduating college. For over 10 years, it served as a formal business entity under which I did all my 'side work.' For those 10 years after earning my degree, I worked as an in-house designer for large corporations, mostly in the high tech industry. During that time I was exposed to some of the best business practices, training and cultural experiences available. I incorporated in 2007 and began working full-time under the CD Austin name.
I have formed relationships with designers, programmers, marketers and other professionals who share my enthusiasm for a job well done. Our small group aims to engage target markets with voice and resonance, reaching audiences the way they want to be reached.
